Conquering Hurdles

The countdown is on to the launch of our digital book on Monday March 28! We chose Apple Books as our first partner in digital sales and will be expanding to other platforms through the year, so stay tuned.

I've found the digital publishing process has closely resembled the winter show season with my Green Hunter, On Point. We were both facing new experiences and figuring out an unfamiliar culture, community, and slightly nervous as we began. Each time he stepped into a new show ring or I filled out a new metadata form, we gained more confidence and experience, respectively.

As was fitting, this past week, "Sunny" earned his first show championship, and we opened up our book to pre-orders in advance of next week's digital launch. It's been so rewarding to achieve these goals this winter, and it reminds me how important it is to continue learning, growing and conquering the hurdles we face, both in the show ring and in life.

I hope you're enjoying the book, newsletter and Judging WTF on our social media platforms. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or ideas. Let's keep the momentum going as we jump into spring!
As always,
Tricia

Bob Crandall: Pinning Under Saddle Classes

Several newsletter subscribers have asked a similar question: "Does the over fences class pinning have an influence in the under saddle placings?"

Judging WTF Panelist Bob Crandall:  Technically, the under saddle should be its own class. The best mover isn’t always the best jumper or the one who had the top trip that day. There are many ways to see a hack class from a judge's perspective, though.

Obviously, there’s personal preference, with your own experiences deciding how you place a class. The canter is the most important gait to me. The expression and rideability count heavily, as well, meaning more specifically a horse's manners.  Again, it’s all your personal preference.

The under saddles are very difficult to judge. These days there are many good movers in a class and a judge has little time to decide the order of preference. There’s not a better feeling when your winner over fences is also a beautiful mover, but that doesn’t happen all that often.

You as a judge have to understand there’s a fine line, and the under saddle is its own class and you have to reward the best movers regardless of how they placed over fences.
This week's Judging WTF Question of the Week is one that all of us should keep at the back of our minds as we compete and judge.

As is stated in the USEF Rule Book, GR801.3, "If a rider's chin strap becomes unfastened, the rider may stop, refasten the chin strap and continue his/her round without penalty or elimination. A judge may, but is not required to, stop a rider and ask them to refasten a chin strap that has become unfastened, again without penalty."

Hayley S. Kolar: as a person, judge or not, you should stop them...safety first no matter what.

Modernlady1: Stop the rider and have them fix it.

Laura Schroff Scaletti: I had this happen at jump 3 in 1997 as I did the Children's Hunters at Middleburg Classic, long before approved helmets, and you had the plastic snap harness. I didn't know what else to do, so I kept trucking around the course. I finished my trip and got a score of 0. Confused, we had the steward go talk to the judge. The judge told him, "Well, it was a safety issue, so I gave her a 0"....yet they let me finish the course🤦‍♀️ We later found out the same thing had happened to a client of the judge's a week prior.

Thankfully, we now have a rule in place that prevents Laura's unfortunate experience from happening today.

Special thanks to all of those who submitted questions in our Judging WTF Private Group! We will get those answered in our upcoming newsletters and on social media.
