The East Coast fall indoor shows are almost concluded, as the National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, finishes this weekend. It's been a great season of competition, with rising stars sharing the spotlight with our seasoned pros in the hunters, and top young riders finishing their junior careers with remarkable performances in the equitation ring.
It was especially fun for me to watch Nick Haness, the "cover boy" of our book, win the WCHR Professional Finals at the Capital Challenge Horse Show. It was Nick's first time competing in the finals, where the top professionals in the country ride four unfamiliar horses in a "Final Four" showdown. Nick proved to be unbeatable that night, being the only rider to score 90 or above on all of his catch rides. I've watched and admired Nick since his junior days (and I shot the cover photo of him, below, at the 2011 Upperville Colt & Horse Show), so being there to photograph and interview him for USHJA In Stride magazine and feel his excitement and enthusiasm was wonderful. Look for the November issue of In Stride to read more about Nick's thoughts on reaching one of his life's goals.
We were also honored to discover that Augusta Iwasaki, this year's winner of the Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals-East and the Washington International Equitation Classic Finals, named our book, Judging Hunters and Equitation WTF? (Want The Facts?), as her favorite horse book in an interview for The Plaid Horse! It's gratifying to know that the book is becoming the go-to resource for many hunter and equitation riders, trainers and parents in our sport.
Stay tuned for upcoming information on new educational resources for show riders that we're developing. In the meantime, we've revamped our favorite judge's card and have it available for you to download and print in case you'd like to practice your judging skills in person at your next show or online via livestream. There are still some great horse shows yet to come this fall, so grab our book, a pen and have fun being the judge!
As always,
Tricia
